Gloucestershire-based training provider carringtonLIME Heritage Skills Training CIC have been awarded a grant amount of £25,512 by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to launch a ground breaking new ‘train the trainer’ programme that will help increase the heritage industries capacity.

The recent Heritage Skills Needs Analysis produced by Historic England highlighted that an additional 105,000 full time employees will be needed to retrofit the UKs traditional buildings each year from 2021 and 20250, with Lime Plastering being one of the most in-demand skills.

carringtonLIMEs new 12 month salaried teacher training programme will help to ensure that the industry has the teaching capacity to meet these demands.

The UK is blessed with many talented lime plasterers many of whom will have learnt their skills onsite. But with 63% of heritage businesses not taking on apprentices or trainees, many new starters are heading to the classroom to gain the skills needed to work in construction.

To be able to meet the industries demand for employees, the heritage training industry needs more competent teachers. Many lime plasterers can confidently demonstrate their skills on site, but being able to convey years of knowledge in a classroom setting, in an efficient way, to a range of students with different learning styles is a new skill for many and one that needs practice and training.

Made possible thanks to National Lottery players, carringtonLIMEs 12 month ‘train the trainer’ programme will give one experienced lime plasterer the opportunity to work alongside Master Plasterer and carringtonLIMEs lead tutor Ben Kerslake to learn the key skills required to confidently deliver quality training. At the end of the programme, they will be offered a 12-month contract with carringtonLIME.

Learnings from the programme will be used to develop a Heritage Training model that can be rolled out across a variety of heritage crafts.

Kate Kerslake, Director of carringtonLIME said: “We are hoping that this programme will not only increase our own teaching capacity, but that of the industry. It has the potential to make a significant dent in the skills shortage.”
